The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen (4CBCH) is located in Southwest Colorado, a glorious place to ride with about 2 million acres of public lands including the San Juan National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness. Our local members come from Durango, Bayfield and Pagosa Springs.
Our chapter is part of the Back Country Horsemen of Colorado and the Back Country Horsemen of America. Our mission is to preserve our historical right to use horses and mules in the backcountry; we work on regular and special trail projects, educate our members on relevant horsemanship and land stewardship matters (including Leave No Trace© principles), and address concerns about agency management of public lands. Oh—and did we mention, we have fun? We do—our social calendar is full, and we enjoy building friendships with like-minded horsemen on informal rides.
The 4CBCH maintains sections of trail in the San Juan National Forest in conjunction with the US Forest Service and we also do several clean-up projects each year. We are working to rebuild some of the heavily accessed trailheads that are enjoyed by hikers, bikers, off-road enthusiasts and of course equestrians. We partner with other users such as Trails 2000 and the Colorado Trail Foundation. We also count wild horses on behalf of the BLM.
Our chapter includes Western and English riders, owners of horses, mules, and ponies, and some folks who want to be involved even though they do not own riding stock. Many of our members pursue more than one way of enjoying their horses—not only on the trails.
So—if you believe in the horseman’s continued access to public lands, please join us in our pursuit to keep the trails open and in top shape, and have a great time, too!
We'd love to have you join us!
